The AfricaEnergyParks project, submitted to the Horizon Europe program with the support of INOVA+, was recently approved. The initiative has secured €5 million in funding to improve access to energy and increase resilience to climate change in peripheral regions of Africa.

Led by Aarhus University, the project brings together 12 partners from six countries: Denmark, Germany, Norway, Ghana, South Africa, and Portugal. INOVA+ plays a crucial role, both in the technical management of the project and in the communication and dissemination of activities.

New Renewable Energy Park in Ghana

With a duration of four years, AfricaEnergyParks aims to establish a Renewable Energy Park in a rural community adjacent to Mole National Park in Ghana, the country’s largest nature reserve. One of the main initiatives will be the installation of a micro-energy production unit composed of a solar photovoltaic energy system, a battery energy storage system, and a biomass generation system.

The project also plans to introduce stoves that use forest and agricultural residues instead of whole logs, replacing traditional stoves. This change will significantly contribute to reducing deforestation and charcoal production. In parallel, local value chains will be established for the manufacturing, installation, repair, and maintenance of energy generation equipment, promoting the productive use of energy.

Empowerment of the local community and the formulation of public policies

Empowering the local community is among the objectives of AfricaEnergyParks. This effort will focus particularly on areas relevant to the development, testing, and certification of energy systems. This activity will help ensure compliance with national and international standards, especially regarding emissions, energy efficiency, and safety.

To promote sustainable and inclusive energy development, detailed analyses will also be conducted to assess the sustainability of the initiatives.  This assessment will be crucial for the formulation of public policies that can be replicated in other regions of Africa.

The activities of AfricaEnergyParks will significantly contribute to accelerating the goals set by African countries in the Paris Agreement, promoting renewable energy solutions and sustainable practices in rural communities.
