The consortium of 46 organizations, from 11 different countries, managed to raise funding of approximately 9 million euros with the approval of INOVA+’s application to Horizon Europe.
GEOSTUD’s application, supported by INOVA+, on the topic “Danube river basin lighthouse – Protection and restoration of wetlands, flood plains, coastal wetlands and salt marshes and their biodiversity” under the call “Actions for the implementation of the Mission Restore our ocean and waters by 2030”, resulted in the DaWetRest project. This project stems from the need to preserve and restore wetland ecosystems, using solutions based on science and nature.
DaWetRest focuses on the restoration and preservation of the Danube River Basin’s valuable ecosystems, including wetlands and flood plains. With over 70% loss of these ecosystems due to anthropogenic activities and climate change, the project seeks to address challenges such as floods, droughts, biodiversity loss, and greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to the overall sustainability and balance of the Danube Basin.
The Danube Basin is the second-largest European river basin and one of the most important freshwater ecosystems responsible for securing many different ecosystem services that are crucial for a variety of sectors such as agriculture, forestry, economy, tourism, and of course, being such an important hot spot of biodiversity, the sector of nature protection.
