INOVA+ is featured in the new STARTS book, which covers a decade of innovation in Europe

INOVA+ is featured in the latest publication, Science+Technology+Arts: Lessons Learned from a Decade of European Transdisciplinary Innovation, which brings together reflections, lessons learned, and notable examples from the European S+T+ARTS initiative. Since 2016, this programme has strengthened the link between art, science, and technology as a driver of innovation, as well as cultural and societal transformation.

The book is now available to download from the official STARTS website and the Ars Electronica Archive:

It is a contribution linked to STARTS Ec(h)o and INOVA+’s work in the STARTS ecosystem

As a partner in the European STARTS Ec(h)o project (2024–2026), INOVA+ provides coordination support and plays a central role in implementing the project, leading the residency programme and capacity-building activities.

Within the STARTS Ec(h)o framework itself, INOVA+ is recognised as a key player in the S+T+ARTS initiative, contributing to the design and consolidation of the mission, co-creation methodology, and STARTS community.

INOVA+ authored the publication

INOVA+ is also represented in the publication by Patrícia Carvalho, Sara Brandão and Patrícia Vieira. They have written a chapter dedicated to the evolution of the STARTS initiative since 2016, exploring its role as a pioneering European platform that links art, science and technology in order to address contemporary challenges, such as the climate crisis, digital transitions and social inequalities.

Throughout the chapter, the authors emphasise the structuring principles of the STARTS approach — interdisciplinarity, societal relevance, and systemic change — and reinforce the idea that STARTS’ strength lies in its qualitative impact. By integrating artistic creativity into innovation ecosystems, it influences practices, institutions, and the way we imagine the future.

‘Over the years, STARTS has expanded its reach and ambition. The 21 major collaborative projects under its umbrella have brought together more than 165 partners from 26 countries. This broad territorial involvement enables the initiative to embrace a rich tapestry of cultural contexts and regional challenges, fuelling approaches to innovation that are based on local realities but informed by broader perspectives.’

A book to inspire Europe and its ecosystems

Alongside its reflective element, the publication showcases a variety of artistic projects and successful initiatives that exemplify the richness of the STARTS approach. These projects demonstrate how collaborations between art, science, and technology can have a broad impact, open up new avenues for experimentation, and reinforce the importance of creativity within the European innovation ecosystem.

INOVA+’s participation in this work, as well as in other STARTS initiatives such as S+T+ARTS AQUA MOTION, S+T+ARTS4AFRICA, S+T+ARTS IN THE CITY and the S+T+ARTS PRIZE, reinforces its position in promoting transdisciplinary approaches in Europe and its commitment to innovation models that bring together creativity, knowledge and technology to address complex societal challenges.
